It’s been a long road for the Calgary Inferno as their first five games of the season have all been on the road. The professional women’s hockey team of the CWHL took to the ice in an early morning tilt on Sunday November 24 against Clarkson Cup defending champions Boston Blades. An evenly matched two periods saw the score sitting at a pair of zeros and then in the third, the Inferno seemed to be ignited.

Inferno’s leading scorer, Danielle Stone netted the first goal of the game at 12:01 of the third on a penalty shot after Blades defender Dru Burns was caught hooking Stone on her way to the net. Just over three-minutes later Taryn Peacock netted her second of the season for the eventual game winning goal.

Stone was assessed a hooking penalty at the 14:29 mark of the third sending the Blades to a powerplay. The Inferno successfully killed the advantage. Just seven-seconds after stepping out of the box, the Blades cut the Inferno lead in half on a goal from Blades leading scorer Casey Pickett.

With some disciplined play in the remaining three-minutes of the game the Inferno were able to shut down the Blades and capture their first win of the season. Of course, no shortage of highlight reel saves were made by Inferno netminder Kathy Desjardins who faced an astounding 37 shots from the Blades players.

The win comes as the ladies return home to Calgary for their home opener on Friday November 29 at WinSport Arena where they’ll face the Toronto Furies on the Olympic sized ice.
